Rough Green Grass Snake

Buddy25 Aug 24, 2004 07:42 AM

Hey there,
I assume your getting into buying a rough green snake, because you love reptiles/amphibians, their nice low cost, because they eat insects, and the fact that there gorgeous snakes.

Let me give it to you plain and simple,... they aren't very good pets. Don't get me wrong, I love my rough green but their look, and no touch snakes. And often they won't live for more than 6 months. Why is this you ask? Most are wild caught, and are easily stressed, and some just don't eat(At the moment I have a rough green who eats about once a week(very rarely) but enough to keep him up and running).

Sources say their good pets, but they obviosully have all gone lucky with their snakes.

Here's a link to LLLReptiles where you can buy a rough green

And fyi the rough greens snakes latin name is Opheodrys aestivus

I can agree with some of what you have said but my luck with "greens" has been much better. This may well be because I am able to directly collect from the wild and in fact live in their native turf so the stress factor is much less. Still I have had very few problems with Rough greens as long as I mist daily. Handling has never been an issue either. Most seem to enjoy running loose through my hands.
