Question for Jimmy (draybar), Terry Parks, or any other Bairds owner

crtoon83 Aug 23, 2004 01:23 PM

I was just looking at your pictures Jimmy and Terry, they are beautiful. I was just wondering my baby tx bairds have spots down the back right now and I was wondering do these just eventually dissapear and they become striped or are mine just differently marked and that's always going to be there. Also i've heard different things on when they will start showing color ...from 4 months to a year...since you two seem to raise them a lot what would you say you've seen on yours? Thanks!

They develope stripes just like a Yellow Rat Snake does. The change takes place over a period of about two years, depending on how fast they become adults.

You might want to start taking pictures after each shed so that you can go back and look at the rate of progression. It would make a great post for this site.

I got them from Terry P this past winter. This is a recent pic of the female that I took for my website. I am really happy with how they are turning out. I hope that they end up looking as good as the adults pics for all you others. (draybar, Terry, Gargoyle etc)

Hey Chris,
The pictures you posted of your babies look just like mine did.
They develope the colors as they grow. Mine are two years old now.
I would imagine that it can vary on just how quickly colors will come in but after about six months to a year you should see change with almost every shed. It is fun to see.
I agree with elaphefan, get pictures after almost every shed you will be surprised with the progression.
This is my female as a hatchling. The male looked basically the same.

I missed the growing up stage on mine.I would have liked to watch the change.Yours will be great looking.I cant wait for more pics.

The yellow colors in your male are really nice. Steve Garrett has a baird that has chartreuse scale edge colors. The light colors can really set them off. They really look great outside in indirect lighting.

Chris -
The spots on the dorsal side of your bairds are comonly called crossbars. They most certainly can be called spots, I am just letting you know what they are more commonly called. The bairds rat snake is the only North American rat snake that has crossbars and stripes during their lifetime. Stripes will appear on your Texas bairds replacing the spots that are there now. Going from crossbars/spots to stripes is a very radical transition. The transisition can take up to three years to complete. It will be almost complete after two years with the finishing taking place the third year roughly. The scale edge colors will also take up to three years to complete. Colors begin showing anywhere from 6 months up to a little over a year.
Here's a pic of a baby Texas Bairds and a picture of him as an adult.

Your bairds will develope stripes and colors. How much I don't know, but most certainly they will have their own indivdual stripes and colors. Be patient. Enjoy the transition and take pics if you can. It's actually alot of fun. You won't notice the change as fast, but when someone comes over and hasn't seen them for several months they won't believe you when you say that's the same snake. LOL.

Here's the baby pic: You are right they look like spots.

Do you think it had to make some changes?

oh yeah...thats a pretty one there terry. I'm definatly going to have to keep a log of all my snakes as they grow...i've been taking pictures of my lic stk and neonate after they shed each time but i just went back and catagorized them...and i will be doing that with my bairds as well. I think it'll be pretty cool to watch 'em grow into their adult colors and stripes. and i never knew they were called crossbars...thanks!

Terry.........The female of the '03 377 pair that I received from you just shed and is starting to show a very light silver gray cast. Hopefully she will blossom into one of those silver metallic beauties than I am partial to. Both are doing quite well. I'll try to get some pics up shortly...........regards..............Steve G.

terryp Aug 25, 2004 04:16 PM

Hi Steve -
Nice to see a post of yours on this forum. I see from a recent post on here that you are still raising havoc with the carriers when they don't do what they say for us. I remember what you did and investigated to get the shipping costs down so we could make that trade. The gulf hammacks are doing great. They are eating good and getting long.

I remember you picking the lighter baird babies from the pics I sent you. I hope that female turns into the silver metallics that I know you like.

Did you have any jani's at Daytona this year? Billy mentioned you on his annual Daytona report on the pit forum. Said you gave him some good pointers on picking the jani's. Imagine all the deppei's and jani's that were stepped over in Mexico instead of collected when permits were available just because they look so drab at first.

Terry Parks

Steve G Aug 26, 2004 03:55 PM

Terry.............My first clutch of jani started hatching the Monday after the show ended. The second clutch should be all out by today. I've got some real good lookers from that pairing of that screaming orange 2 year old male and my original #2 female. I'll get some pics up after their first shed. These look to be some of the best jani that I have produced yet....................stay tuned!
