babies fighting already

janome Aug 23, 2004 02:22 PM

I have 2 baby bahaman anoles approximately 6-8 weeks old. one is female for sure but not sure on the other. I noticed them dominating each other today.(One is definately the dominate one.)They are housed in a 10 gallon with branches and lights. The less dominate one spends more time on ground. Should they be split up into their own tanks or would just a bigger tank like a 20 high be ok for the 2 of them.
I'm thinking also if the one is a male I don't want them to mate anyways since they are litter mates so probably the best thing would be to just seperate them? How big do they have to be to be able to tell male from female?

The male would be the bigger of the two. If the bigger one is the one you know is a female than they are probably both females. Females would not dominate males unless the male were half her size. It would be ok if they breed, you don't have to raise the eggs, plus inbreeding for one generation is perfectly fine so if you wanted to raise the babies there would be no deformities due to that. I would recommend getting another anole, if possible, another female. If you seperate them they will become lonely (yes lizards do become lonely). I keep 7 young bahaman anoles in a 20 gallon tank, most people say that is too many for that small of a tank, but they are very healthy and breeding too. I have two males in the tank with 5 females and the males NEVER fight. They both breed with the females without conflict. If you do get anole one, expect one of them to get pushed around a lot at first. One they have established a hierarchy there will be little or no conflict. I hope this helps... sorry for such a long post.

for your reply. They look the same size to me. The dominate one has a triangle pattern down her back...like her mama. And the other one has a whiteish strip down her back. I want to keep them together. Seems to me they would get lonely. I'm thinking I'll move them to a 20 gallon high tank in the future when funds permit.
Thanks again..

p.s. I've read they should have 10 gallon per anole. So how is it yours all get along in a 20 gallon tank?

I caught mine all in the same "territory". They have their hierarchy all worked out so there are no problems. Now if I had a young male in with the two adult males there would be fights when the younger one matured. They also have plenty of climbing area and hiding places to it's not like they are forced to share the same branch or anything. I guess they tell you one anole to every ten gallons because if you look at their habitat in the wild, males control territories that are very large for such small lizards. I have noticed that males share a territory with 1-3 females, and some young anoles as well.

Where did you catch them? I caught a little baby Green Anole in Corpus Christi in July, and so far she's doing great. I don't know its a she, I just refered to her as that when I caught her and it stuck. Is there any way to tell gender when they're babies? What's odd is that she isn't happy unless she's outside. I keep her outside during the day, but when I have to leave her inside all day, she just sulks.
