hatching duration question

joevacus Aug 23, 2004 03:26 PM

I have a general question to anybody who might know. I have read in books and seen posted on these message boards that the hatching time for RES can be anywhere from 65 to 95 days. I did not have any luck the last two times my FARES laid eggs when I tried to incubate them at 85 degrees so the last time she laid ( May 11, 2004 ) I kept the eggs ( 5 ) in an un-heated container. One of the eggs collapsed and turn black within a couple of weeks but the other 4 look pretty good to not so good ( but shy of being obviouse 'baddys'. The temperature range over this duration ( now at 104 days and counting ) has been from 70 to 83 degrees. I am tempted to make a small incision in one of the shells to see if anything is going on in there. Any suggestions?

turtle eggs can go into diapause during development if conditions are not ideal so it can take a very long time to develop i would not give up and cut them just yet
