Jump-Start and anorexic leos...?

shortydsm Aug 23, 2004 04:19 PM

I bought Jump-Start, "A concentrated caloric supplement and appetite stimulant for reptiles and amphibians" for my anorexic leo. We haven't figured out how/why she is not eating, and I can't get a fecal from her since she isn't pooping. I am also giving her ParaZap just in case it's internal parasites. Anyway, I am trying everything I can in the meantime, includng this Jump-Start gel. It says it "provides an energy boost for animals that are off-food, anorexicm calorie deficient or breeding." My leo doesn't mind taking it either, though it's been about 5 days & she still won't eat anything. Anyone have any tips/comments/experiences with this?

I don't know anything about any of the products you're using but am wondering instead if you've posted before?
What's the leos current situation?
How old, temps, substrate, size etc

Or have those questions been answered

Yes I have been a "poster" since January 03. I haven't been on much in the past 6 months though, mainly b/c of work, moving around, finishing school.

Substrate is paper towels. She was housed with (and now seperated from) 3 other female leos. Unsure of her age, she was an adult when I got her from Petco about 2 yrs ago, so maybe 3-4 yrs old now?

what about the temps? Do all your heat pads work? I had mine malfunction. Also perhaps in the seperated leo cage put paper around the cage so she can't see out to reduce stress. Dunno what the problem may be but try to see or talk to a vet before you administer anything

About the posting i meant had you posted all this information in a previous post already and was i being redundant, not your posting start date :D

good luck

I swear by jumpstart for eventually getting a leo to eat.. but I'd also suggest mixing about an inch long squeeze of the gel with a jar of turkey baby food, water or pedialyte just until its liquid enough to bring up into a syringe and feeding that to her. I usually do this for a week to 2 weeks and after about that span of time all my leos who've been ill have started eating again.. save one.. and she was egg bound and my vet didn't catch it. You can freeze the resulting mixture in ice cube trays and then put the cubes in storage bags.. and take one out to thaw in the microwave when you need it. Fresh daily and you won't waste alot. I've found about 3 mL two or 3 times a day of the mixture is good to start with.
