i can't answer the breeding question, but they do make great pets! I used to have male that i was hoping to breed but he suddenly died last year. i was very sad to lose him as he had a very 'cheeky' personallity. as weird as that may sound! he was always on the front glass watching what was going on outside in the room. he was still very shy when you opened up the tank but with some patience i was able to hand feed him waxworms!
whether this goes for all giant days i don't know. but i definately recommend you get one at some point!!

I have a breeding pair in a 30 gallon high tank. I have 5 eggs (3 clutches) incubating in a Hovabator. I don't like to handle mine because of their skittishness. Mine love a combinations of 3 baby foods (bananna, kiwi, fruit mix) mixed with honey, calcium powder, avian vitamins, and Day Gecko vitamins. Have to provide a lot of calcium and vitamins during pregnancy so shells are well formed and hard. My cage has about 12 bamboo sticks (~1 foot long) placed vertically and horizontally in the cage with bark chips on the bottom. Heat lamp and UV bulb is also included. Hope this helps out!!
Of course we are biased. We mainly deal with the phelsuma species and have had great success with most of the subspecies. The grandis (giant day gecko) is a great choice for keeping and breeding. We do not suggest handling but there is always an exception to every rule. We can handfeed several of our geckos so that is definitely a possibility as well. They will give you years of enjoyment with their acrobatic displays and you can witness all stages of breeding with them as they are usually not to shy about courtship, copulation, and even egg laying. We have some great pics on our website of some morphs we are working with as well. Please take a look. If you have any specific questions please feel free to e-mail us.

I have 3 and they are fab! The one male is on his own, ive had him for about 2 years, he was extremely hand tame and would come running up to me, lick fruit off my fingers and on occasions would stand on my hand with his front legs. I decided to build him a new gorgeous tank and transfered him but he has gone really shy since. He will probably get tame again if im patient.
I also have a pair in another tank, they are young and very enjoyable to watch. I have provided them with HUGE tanks, BIG leaved plants and lots of bamboo. They love them! hopefully will get some fertile eggs soon!
They can be quite skittish and masterful escape artists. I dont handle them but i love to watch them! I would encourage anybody to have them but be patient and gentle.
