Shed question...

make_urself Aug 23, 2004 08:30 PM

I just picked up a gold tegu and i noticed that his tale is slightly thinner and much darker half of its way down. It looks like if old skin wasnt shed. Im letting him soak and tried to kinda rub the skin off but no go. Should I be worried of tail loss or is this normal?

sounds like it already lost its tail once...hence it being thinner

Do you mean that there is a "pinched" section in the middle, or that starting half way down, it is darker and thinner the rest of the way. If the latter, then as stated above, it's probably the result of losing his tail some time ago...

Then i guess hes lost his tail...Is this a bad thing or is it kinda common...i figured tails get regrown but this one looks blackish and has little muscle movement...however the animal itself looks fine and healthy...Any problems with losing tails or should I not worry so much...

It is not all that big a deal that its tail has been lost. They will regrow it will just never have the same length or coloration as it did before it was broke. So really the only adverse effect is a cosmetic one. Since he came to you with a regrown tail there really is nothing to worry about. If it happens again the only thing is to make sure that it does not get infected. Good luck
