Any suggestions on handling new collareds?

MrHobby Aug 23, 2004 08:50 PM

I have 2 male collareds (different cages) purchased 3 months ago that are slowly calming down. I am unable to handle them. I hand feed them as often as possible and I can actually touch them from time to time, but, anything more seems to be too much. I read postings in this forum where collareds are handled and removed from their cages for extended periods of time. If mine were removed, I would loose them within seconds!! Could I have 2 lizards that simply do not like to be handled or does it take time to develop the trust?
Thanks

they are wild caught. It is more of an obstacle that you will have to overcome to gain their trust. If you interact with them daily they will recognize you as a friend than a predator. Some may, unfortunately, never calm down. After they get to know you, you can take them seperately out, due to males fighting, and hold them. Also, they may be in too small a cage. Wild caughts require larger cages, which can be 50-60 gallons, the least being a 40 (in my opinion).

If they aren't Wild Caught then ignore the above. You will just need to contact with them until you gain their trust.

Thanks for the information. They are a captive breed.
