late egg failure?!

jbachi Aug 23, 2004 09:15 PM

I have 16 perfect leo eggs incubating at 85F. Last week the first clutch that was laid hatched and the young ones are very healthy. Yesterday I noticed that the next egg in line to hatch had some fuzz growing on it after about forty days. This morning it was all dented in and I cut it open and all that was in there was yellowish goo. Not even an embryo. It seemed to have been putting on weight like the rest and none of the other eggs seem to have any fungus? I don't know what to make of it. Any info would be appreciated. thanks.

I have seen infertile eggs last a long time with out going bad, although they usually do within a couple weeks. The reason they were gaining weight like the others is probably because they were absorbing moisture from the substrate. Candling the eggs at about a week old will show if they are fertile or not. If you are not sure it is okay to leave them in the incubator. Once they start to collapse, turn brown and grow fuzz/mold, its a good idea to remove them so the mold doesn't affect the other eggs. I hope this helps and good luck with the other eggs!
