Can I put Timothy Hay down as a substrate?
I use it for the cool side of my torts pen. They love to dig around and hide in it. Just make sure it stays away from the heat lamps so it doesn't start a fire.

Wow...I didn't know that timothy hay can catch fire under a heat lamp...Has anyone had that problem?...I am now thinking of totally re-arranging my tortise pens and their substrates...Thanks for the warning
What do you use on the other side?
My torts are still very young so it freaked me out everytime I saw someone warning that they can injest sand and some of the other stuff they use. I use an indoor/outdoor carpet. Not the rough fake grass kind...the shorter softer kind that is almost like felt. I have two sqares so I can pull one out and wash it when it gets dirty and put the other one in. I have that covering the whole floor and then I put the timothy hay all over on the cool side of the pen. They just love it and we haven't had any problems with it so far. Just one other idea to consider.
There are so many out there you need to find the one that works for you the best. Good luck!

THANK YOU SO MUCH. That is the best/easiest answer I have gotten
I am definietly going to try it!
Glad I could help.
I got mine at Freidman Bros. Also you can go get two floor mats that might work. I have done that too. I needed two since my pen needed two to cover the floors. I made sure to get something soft and not fuzzy so they won't get there nails stuck in it or try and eat it. You can get those pretty much anywhere and they are usually washable. I think this way is so much easier and less messy. Then all you have to do is grab the rugs, shake out the timothy hay and throw in the washer then just pop in the clean ones until you need to change them again. Have fun!
