Were can I go to read up on Ball Python Genetics and breeding...

louiec Aug 24, 2004 01:36 PM

I have been reading around here... and have found it to be a little confusing.. (I am new to Ball Pythons)...

also I have a more specific question... can you breed a morph from one line to the same morph... but another line (i.e. Pastel Jungle female from one breeder crossed with a pastel jungle male from another breeder... both totally unrelated... wil I still get 100% pastel jungles babies?)

I guess what I am trying to ask is if certain morphs are sensative to weather or not the parents are related or not ? and if that will effect the out come of the eggs ?

please pardon if these questions are basic... I am just getting into balls...

It's a little hard to confirm compatibility with co-dominant morphs (like pastel). But it's looking like all the pastels are compatible. The real test will be if any of the supers from mixed lines produce any either normals or supers bred to normals indicating that there are two different pastel genes.

By the way, pastel X pastel does not produce 100% pastels. This is because the pastels are only heterozygous and each parent also has a normal copy of the pastel gene. Each egg from pastel x pastel has a 25% chance of being super pastel, 50% chance of being pastel, and 25% chance of being completely normal. However, if you breed super pastel x super pastel (both homozygous pastel, no normal for pastel genes) you will get 100% super pastel (baring incompatible lines as discussed above).

The only morph so far that I can think of with good evidence of incompatible lines is axanthic. There are also rumors of incompatible ghosts but I haven't heard confirmation of proven lines not producing ghosts.
