Hognose suddenly not eating.... need help!

dmac77 Aug 24, 2004 02:58 PM

I have a male 2003 hognose that is suddenly refusing food. He has been eating on a very regular schedule up til now, but suddenly he just refuses to take anything. I had moved him up to one f/t fuzzy a week about a month ago, and he was liking those just fine. Before that, it was 2 f/t pinkies a week with no problem. He has never refused food, even in shed phase.

I tried feeding him on the regularly scheduled day and time... Friday at 7pm, but he wouldn't eat. So, I tried again Sunday afternoon, and still refusing. I just tried again today, but still nothing. His eyes aren't cloudy or anything, so it isn't a shed thing.

Any advice would be more than welcome. This is the longest he's gone without food since I've owned him. Not sure if this is normal behavior or not, but I'm getting a little bit worried.

Dave.

Hogs tend to be notorius for this very problem. It seems that males even more so. Of he is a 2003 he is probably looking for a mate. Odd is an early 2003 and he is breeding with my female right as we speak. He is also off food. I really wouldnt worry about it. If he goes for more than 4 months, then i would maybe consider something like scenting his food, but i am pretty sure that he will be fine anyway...

Thanks for the advice. And yeah, he's an early 2003 snake. About 12 inches long now, maybe a tad less. Hopefully that's all it is, horniness... hehe I might be getting a female soon that is about the same age and size, so if I do I'll try putting them together.

Thanks again, and I'll keep an eye on him.

If you plan on keeping a hognose as a pet (especially a male hognose that is not a baby anymore), then you must get used to the idea that they do not eat every week like clockwork. They will go off feed at times, for reasons that may or may not be known, even under the best care. It won't hurt him. He'll be fine, and he'll eat again when he wants to. If he isn't losing weight, then there is no issue no matter how long he fasts.

What you need is a Cal king to eat the leftovers.

shes pretty good but occasionally doesn't eat for a few weeks, and then she'll eat her usual 3 pinkies. She's a small 03, only about 11 inches and I wish I could get her to eat more so she'd grow quicker, but as long as she's healthy I'm not too concerned. And don't fear, snakes can go a looong time without eating and be just fine....when sola refuses on her regular schedule I try again 2 days later...then if she still doesn't want anything I just wait til the next friday (her normal feeding day). I figure she'll eat when she's hungry. Yours will too.

Thanks for the advice. I'm used to my corns that eat whatever I put in front of them. This little guy had been doing that for a while and I guess I was just unprepared for the abrupt change in behavior pattern.

I'll try not to stress too much.

Hoggies are a big switch from my garbage disposal boa!! Unfortunately, each of my snakes tend to have their finnicky sides (besides my boa, of corse). No worries tho, like i said before your boy should be fine just fine
