breeding western hognose

traci929 Aug 24, 2004 03:09 PM

Does anyone know if you can breed 2 different types of hognoses? For instance my western with a tri color.

It's "possible". You may get some hate mail from this forum as most of the guys don't believe in hybrids. I get this feeling from monitoring this forum for the last few years. I for one would love to see a eastern x western. I think you'd get a great looking animal that would hopefully eat mice.

I was just wondering if it was possible. The western we have is a beautiful snake. I just came across a picture of a tri color and was wondering if it was possible. I called my friend at the pet store and she has never seen a tri color. Do you know of a good site to purchase snakes from? I would love to just have one. Thanks

Tri Colors don't appear to be that closely related to Western Hognose snakes. I've heard of some pretty odd hybrids, but I don't think this match up will work. They're really geographically separated. I'm also not sure if the offspring would be in much demand. Good luck!

It would be unlikely that a female of one type (say Western) would be interested in a male of another type (say tricolor), but there have been some examples where rules fly out the window when snakes are kept in captivity.

Look at cornsnakes and Cal kings. Nowhere in nature do they meet, and yet, the captive-made crosses are now common. Look at Carpet pythons and Green Tree Pythons.. who would have thought it would be possible for those to cross.. and yet someone did it at least a few times. Same with blood pythons and ball pythons (totally different continents, and it worked.)

So it might be possible, but I'm sure not easy.
