Honduran Firebelly has problem...help please

milehighherps Aug 24, 2004 04:53 PM

I have a beautiful female Honduran firebelly (Dyer lines) who about a month ago stopped eating. She is an 01 not a baby and was eating FT small rats/jumbo mice. She went into blue and had a bad shed in pieces but has not eaten since. Yesterday while cleaning the cage i had to remove her (i dont do this often as she is a pissy girl and bites every chance she gets). After securing her head i examined her and found her underside of tail to be all raised bumpy and hard (crispy) like and a rust color. There are also some spots like this on the underside only up to about mid belly. I tried to pick some off but to no avail. I then decided perhaps to treat it with some ointment thinking maybe fungus? We have a vet appt on Thurs morn, but was wondering what all of you thot this might be. Has anyone seen this? She is housed with a male Hondo (Sargent lines) who is just fine and eating and bigger than her. Any help is much appreciated. susan

Sounds like a retained shed, then again a form of scale rot or burn ?
I would soak her tail then let her pull thru a dry towel and see what comes off and keep some kinda Triple A on it till the Vet can confirm something.

could be from laying in fecal or urin and the bacteria started to eat away at her scales, where it probably got under the belly scales , try soaking her in water for a day or two , then keep her dry and away from fecal or urine puddles, it should go away after a shed or two, sometimes it will scab up so you may want to soak her for one day once a week till it heals completely.

Could be that or something else, I'm not a vet and its hard to diagnose something without seeing it.

Good luck, and when you get a chance could you send me some picks of your Hondurans, I have several different lines.
send pics to snakemannick@aol.com

thanks,
Nick

But i dont think it is from lying in fecal or urine as i keep my cages VERY clean. Not a retained shed either as i monitor that quite closely. This girl has always been a bit strange as she has only 1/2 lenght of tongue (that way when i got her) so u cant see her flick it at all...doesnt go out of her mouth! Well i will let u all know what the vet says on Thursday! And i will post some pics soon too. I have 2.4 Hondos from Dyer and Sargent. Two females should breed this year as they are good sized. I am hoping anyway! Thanks again! susan
