When you say locationally training them, do you mean getting them to go in the same spot of the cage? If so, that's what I need to know as well! Mine could care less where he goes to the bathroom. I've read all the stuff on potty training, but this part seems to get skipped. Does everyone else's tegus poop in the same spot of the cage from the start? I look forward to the responses to this post...

Hi all,
I trained meego to go potty on a paper towel when he was 16 inches long or so, and from then on, he has been going in localized spots....now that he is 42inches long, and a free roamer, he will either go outside, or if it is cold outdoors, he will go in the bathtub! The way we got him to go on the paper towel was very tedious, we waited until we knew he had to go, then put him on the paper, if he walked off we put him back on, until he went, then made a huge fuss of him when he eventually did go, it sounds a little weird, but it worked!!
Hope this helps.

Hello and good luck! One of mine started using the same spot in the tank from day one and has gone there ever since. The other two no matter what I have tried just go where they please. Usually its in the tub while they are soaking and that is my que that they are ready to get out. I really wish I had some great little pearl of wisdom here but like you I am also at a loss. I will have to keep checking this one to see if any one has a good idea. These guys are very intelegent critters but they only learn what they want it would seem.(kinda like kids) Any way good luck!

When you soak your tegu will they just lay there? My guy will only spend a couple minutes laying there before he tries to climb out.
As you can see the black and white and my blue really only like there soaks to be short before they are looking for an out. My red on the other hand as you can tell from the pic will just lay there as long as I will let him. There are times he lays there so long I start to worry he has drowned himself. The more I have them in the tub though the better they are getting. I put them in for short periods of time then allow them the run of the house. It seems to be working pretty well as they are not nearly as eager to get out now as they were when younger. One thing to check too is water temp if it is too warm they want out like now. too cold and they want out fast. I try to make my water about the same temp as the cool side of thier tank so that it is comfortable for them. Good luck.
