Last L. calligaster picture...two snakes together to show color difference

Johne Jun 24, 2003 09:05 PM

Could be more common than I have seen, but I find the lighter snake very interesting...the stomache pattern is also very light colored...more beige, than dark brown/black...It almost looks more eastern milk than prarie kingsnake IMO. What is your opinions??? Note the larger snake is none-to-happy to be photographed. Very mean for a prarie king.

My apologies for the containment picture...

I have not caught a lot of Prairie Kings, maybe 5 or 6 and they were all in Kansas or Missouri, but I have not found one that light. Maybe it is your camera, but the ones we find are always a little more olive colored and not as gray as even the darker one appears. That light one is a very pretty snake. I always thought they might be fun to breed, but the babies are so tiny.

There are more pictures on my website if you want to see them.

A couple of Kansas Prairie Kings

The snake really looks just like the picture...and the darker snake is a lot darker than what I typically would find. The second pic of your prarie king looks a lot like what I more commonly find...nice snakes.
