feeding question

buffysmom Aug 24, 2004 10:40 PM

I have a 1 year old corn who was 36 grams on 6/4 when I got her. I feed her one small fuzzy rat a week, which she horks down w/in a few minutes of seeing it. She is growing like a weed on this diet & weighed 53 grams on 7/30. She has shed once a month for the last 3 months. I would never intentionally power feed or try to sneak in a second prey item after she ate the first. I think she's doing great & is maybe making up for lost time in her first year. Do things sound normal/OK?

For starters, this is the prime growing season. Corns are active and ready to eat but will start to throttle back with the lengthening nights. A 33% weight gain now is not bad for a yearling. Mine are about 120g. now but I feed once ever 5-6 days.
To determine if you are giving the proper sized meal, need to relate the prey to the snakes body size. Rule of thumb is the meal should be somewhat larger than the snakes body. A small fuzzy rat sounds just fine. Does it make a noticable budge once it is in her gut? If so, keep them coming!! If not, then try to increase the prey size...

Thanks so much! Yes, it leaves a sizeable lump (& more feces by the week!). It seemed to me like things were going well w/ her, but I wanted to be sure.

He was one of the founders of the Black Panthers. He was murdered in 1989. Maybe not an association you want to make - depends on how you view the BPs...

Well thanks. It ain't easy finding famous Newton names after the first 6! I had to do an internet search to come up w/ #6- Helmut Newton (& that newt's a girl!) I'm also keeping Thandie Newton in mind, an actress. I'll have to research the BPs.
