It is a defense mechanism. Almost does sound like small dog. My frogs would do this when they were stressed out (such as just after receiving them) and I would walk by their tank. What is the set up like?

I have it housed in a clear plastic tank. About 1/12 to 2 1/2 gallons. The bottom is filled with wet moss.
thanks
Try putting it in something like a 10 gallon with about 2 or 3 inches of bed a beast (expandable coconut husk). Moss will often cause problems because insects can hide in it and pose a threat to a frog. Good luck.
