Free Range WTF

victor_1616 Aug 25, 2004 01:48 AM

I was just wondering if anybody has ever heard of a free range tree frog. My Whites escaped a little while ago so i just kept filling up his water dish, misting his cage and putting crickets in his cage and sure enough everymorning all the crickets are gone. He just roams free around my bedroom all day nd returns to his cage all ngiht. Does anybody have any concerns or comments? they would be greatly apreciated... As a matter of fact i am sitting at my computer right now at 2:45 A.M. watching him jump from the outside wall of my bearded dragon enclosure to the outside of his enclosure it's absolutely fascinating watching him interact an inviornment that isnt his tank.

I have a couple concerns...

1) Electric Sockets- If he gets a finger in that, you'll be having frog legs for dinner

2) So many things in a bedroom can have residue on them that can be harmfull to the tree frog- Dust on a TV screen, windex on a mirror/window, sprayed perfume would cling to alot...
And then there is the fact that you simply cannot wash everything in your room down with declorinated water so you can be sure it's clean.

3) You have other animals in the room with heat lamps, if the frog sits on one too long, again, you'll be having frog legs for dinner. Same thing with a normal lamp.

4) It will be pretty dang hard to find feces if you ever need to get a fecal done.

5) Someone could accidently smush him

6) If he dies, theres a good chance you won't know untill he starts to smell.

7) If he gets out of your room, than you'll have to search the rest of your home.

8) You can't really be sure of what he's eating. He might decide to take in a fly that flew by, or that moth on the ceiling

9) Are you sure that he's eating the crickets, and they aren't just excaping?

There are tons more things that could go wrong. I hope this helps you make the right decision

Every single socket in my room is used up, the door is always closed. He cant get smooshed because i am the only one that comes in here and itz such a small room you would see him on the ground. As for heat lamps he basically just stays under the bearded dragon tank all day and then at night goes strait for his tank and then when morning hits he hides back under the beardie tank. As for the dust on t.v. screen comment im not quite sure i understand what your trying to say. The crickets are not escaping ive seen him go into his cage and eat them, and with the way the tank is desighned cricket escapies are very unlikely. If you could furthewr explain the residue comment that would be greatly appreciated thankyou.

the dust can cling to him and dry him out. How big is the tank you bought to keep him in anyway?

victor_1616 Aug 25, 2004 08:12 PM

35 gallon tall

Residue. I'm assuming you have the beardie tank on some sort of table or stand or something. When the stands are packaged and sent out, I highly doubt that they scrub them down with soap and water and rinse well. So any chemicals or residue from plastics or whatever is left on. Then you get it, put it together, and you're done. I don't know anyone that scrubs down the stands when they get them. So you have factory residue.
Then, if you use perfume, cologne, hairstuff, whatever, you are spraying it. Not all of it is making it onto you, some will fall onto the things near where its being sprayed. That's leaving another residue behind, won't be healthy if your frog aborbs that.
If you use any rug cleaners, or floor cleaners, it could have splashed onto the wall.

About the Heat Lamps: The frog is likely adjusting to the new, bigger "enclosure". Once he starts to get a bit more used to it, he may decide to do a bit more exploring. Then sizzle sizzle... Frog legs for dinner!

Another thing, are you making sure you keep the temps and humidity right in your whole room? Do you want to have to keep all the temps and humidity right in your room?

If anything didn't make sense to you, tell me and I'll try to explain again, I'm not the best and explaining what I'm thinking.

Please reconsider letting your White have free range, for its sake.

I think it's a pretty bad idea, although it would be interesting if done correctly.

Once, my large whites escaped and I found him in the budgie cage with my female budgies tail in his mouth. Crazy Frog.
Needless to say, his lid now has a lock on it.

You are crazy for letting an amphibian climb around like that. One other reason dehydration. He could dehydrate and then die. This is simply careless care for a pretty animal!!!

Then its settled back to his tank he goes. I did see anything wrong with it at first but thanks to all the helpfull members of kingsnake.com i see how much of and idiot i was being thankyou for all of your comments.

That would be so awesome if you could have him free roam, but I understand the precautions. I used to let my Green tree frogs climb up my wall whenever I would clean the tank, they loved it!
