Help me out with plants in a pacman tank

needaurita Aug 25, 2004 03:08 AM

Hey all. I want to add some plants to my 10 gallon with a substrate currently consisting of 5 inches of Bed-A-Beast and peat moss. Now what I was wondering is which plants will do best in a tank that gets warm (75-84, A/C is getting installed now) and is very humid. I will have a Repti-Sun Flo. bulb just resting over the tank, figure maybe 10" above the soil. Which plants are tough and could be easily found? There is a Home Depot, OSH and Lowes right by my house so hopefully something there.

Also I was wondering what would be required to have plants or moss on the sides of the tank. Would I have to pack the sides with dirt or is there a plant that I can plant against the glass that will grow up it? Thanks!

PS I am guessing I should not plant the plants in the substrate because I will have to change the substrate occasionally. Probably would have them in plastic potters. Ty!

Pothos works well. It will grow in almost anything, even plain water. They don't do AS well if you put them directly under a heat lamp, but if not immediately below the lamp, it should be fine. After you get the plant, take it out of its regular soil, wash off that roots and plant, and then place it in clean, organic potting soil and give the plant a few weeks before you put it in with the frog. That will assure that all toxins such as fertilizers are gone from the plant. Good luck.

Ok thanks for the suggestion. I had two more questions -

1. Any other plants that maybe do not grow up so much as they grow out? Since I have a 10 Gallon I don't have a whole lot of vertical space to work with. I have tried English Ivy but it didn't seem to last long.

2. Whats the best way to grow plants or moss on the sides of the tank? I have heard of siliconing peat moss to the back and planting plants in the moss, and I have also heard of "air plants", ones that don't need soil...but I don't know if they would work or even if they exist at all.

Thanks a bunch!

Pothos doesn't grow too horribly much upwards. I kept one in a rubbermaid and it grew out as well. If it does start to grow too large, you can cut back a shoot and even replant it in plain water. The cut pieces should grow into a seperate plant.

I think most plants that are growing on the sides of the tank have been glued onto a cork bark background and then the cork has been placed in the back of the tank. At least from the Dendrobates tanks I have seen and tried to make that has been the case.

Thanks for the info guys, I think I am going to try this: Get a piece of cork bark and cut it to the size of my tank, then order certain live moss off of eBay and plant the moss in there. Thanks again and let me know if you have any more suggestiongs.
