snakes and lizards

janome Aug 25, 2004 06:54 AM

I have read the rough green snake can be housed with lizards, such as anoles, since they are insect eaters. Has anyone tried this and if so how do they get along? I have 2 anoles that I'm going to put in a bigger tank eventually so was wondering about making it into a lizard/snake habitat. Thanks.

I wouldn't do it. It might stress either species too much as they will compete for insects, habitat, etc.

I would suggest not doing that... really reptiles just aren't supposed to mix species in the terrarium. Possibly 2 types of snakes, or 2 types of lizards, but keeping both in the same tank could prove disasterous.

Though I don't know too much about rough green snakes, any snake of larger size would be inclined to make an anole a food item given the chance.

I totally agree with Andy, and Everlight.
Rough greens stress extremely easily, and another animal in its terrarium/space with only cause two stressed animals along with competition among food.

And still, although rough greens are insectivores,... they may pick off the tiny lizard/gecko/frog/toad roommate.

I had an 80 gallon tank with a plexi-glass divider with small holes in it. I housed anoles on one side and a rough green snake on the other. It worked really well and was a very attractive enclosure.
