chameleon claws (wallless Screen cage)

stjpball Aug 25, 2004 08:37 AM

I havnt posted in this forum in a long while but anyhow i noticed my male panthers has two claws that got pulled, all he does is ahng out on the screen in his cage i have two large umbrella plants he never goes on, and evey s often hell fall and i think this is hwo that ahppend, so i put some neosporin on the two wounds and hopefully he should be good dosnt seem stressed by em.

Anyhow i was thinking about one of those wall less cages, i was wondering how they were if people have had good luck with them, and what the diameter of the base is? Some pics of your own would be great.

Thanks

My veiled did the same thing - he lost 3 claws, but I think one just got broken off and may grow back. The chameleon condos (if thats what we are talking about here) have very little lateral movement and IMO a cham needs to be able to move side to side more then up and down. My cham hardly ever goes near the bottom of the cage and like yours prefers to be on the bend-a-branches instead of in the plants themselves. Crickets and other feeders can easily get out of them too. I would also think setting up a good basking spot and keeping humidity up would be issues. My cham liked to climb on the cage in one corner only so I put up some netting (stuff used for LaCrosse sticks) in that corner. He now goes under the netting to get on the cage! So I will have to sew it right onto the cage mesh to keep him off the cage. How big is your setup and do you have a good amount of branches, vines, etc. (not including plants) for it to climb on? If it is always climbing on the cage in one spot, I would try the cotton netting before investing in a cham condo - which IMO you could build on your own with a pole, spare wood, and large salad bowls.

try providing a plant big enough that they can move freely or semi freely through yet still hide and they should use it.....i use the ficus bush type plants and keep the small branches in the middle off and my veiled only uses the lateral bend a branches to move to bask or hunt faster......

also if possible a bigger cage can be the solution....
