Any advice on feeding?

skinkgirl Aug 25, 2004 09:16 AM

I relized when i found three dead crockets under a rock when i came back from vacation the other day, that I was having trouble getting my lizard to find the crickets. Sometimes I will hand feed them to him but I would rather not since its not naturall. But when I don't I find that as soon as i release the few crickets into the cage, they run off, hide and never come out. There are quite a few places where they can hide such as; logs, rocks and underneth the water dish. I need advice on how to insure that my skink will get to the crickets.
P.S My lizard is somewhat lazy and usually won't chase the crickets too far.

I would remove the hiding places for the crickets.

Are you serious about hand feeding crickets being unnaturaul? You have the lizard in a cage in your house, you are far from naturaul!!!

Our guy at work was pretty lazy when it came to hunting crickets, but I think it was more because of the other one that was with him. The one that was sold was the aggressive eater and this guy just hid in the back. I had to take him out to feed him, but even then he wouldn't eat that much. Now that he is alone and with my help handfeeding, he is nice and active! I am afraid, however, I have caused him to bite a few of my co workers when they stuck their hands in there thinking he was being fed. Oops! I am working on this behavior though. I no longer handfeed, but I do help him out by squeezing the cricket just enough to cause it to become slow and injured so he can get them easier. That method may actually help you out a little too. If he at least shows interest in them and attempts to hunt them down then this should help. that way they are not jumping all over the place. I would also move out hiding places during feeding.

newherpaddict: that is a damn cute picture!!!!
