Peruvian BCC experts please help

sayyedn Aug 25, 2004 09:52 AM

Hello-

I just got a new, and first Peruvian yesterday. She is yearling, and a true devil to say the least. I have handled her once getting her out of the bag/box but then she turned around, looked at me, hissed, and then bit me. I put her in her cage and now every time I open her cage and touch her with the snake hook she hisses and strikes. Is there anything I can do to try and tame her down some?

Thanks,
Sayyed

I am no expert, but with any new boa I have ever gotten I always wait at least five days before I interact with him/her. This gives them proper time to get acquanted with their new home and lower their stress level, which is probably what is causing your Peruvian to be aggressive.
Good luck and post pictures when you get a chance.

That is top-notch advice.. there is no substitute for taking your time and seeing what the animal needs.

Here's an overview of what you may expect from your new Peru boa..

If I were you, I'd leave her alone for a day or so. It's probably not going to do the whole job, but it might help. Alot of BCC that hiss, do it because they feel threatened. If she's hissing and then striking (after a much recommended couple of days alone) I'd suggest placing her on the floor and sitting or laying down beside her (not close enough to be bitten in the face, mind you). If you present yourself on a level above the snake, it will scare her. If you are on more of a common level, she'll feel more secure. At this point, wearing gloves if need be, gently brush her sides and be gentle. If/when she does bite you, DO NOT pull away! By not giving in, she will realize that biting doesn't work. Eventually, if you work with her enough, she will become accustomed to you. Some snakes are more stubborn than other...Peruvians being high up on that list. Good Luck.
