are tort nests obvious?

kameron Aug 25, 2004 12:01 PM

I have a pair of redfoot torts that have been together for several months now. They live in an outdoor pen, so they have a natural dirt floor, naturally. I've given my female an option of nesting in a specific area - half of a large kennel turned over and filled with moistened peat. They both go in the 'nestbox', but there have been no eggs thus far. I've seen them breed several times, so I would assume she would be gravid by now - but this is my first tortoise breeding experience. My main question is this: if she was more inclined to dig a nest on the plain ground, what would I look for? Is it obvious, or do they hide it well? Could anyone post a picture of an in situ nest of a redfoot? Any other information I should know about breeding my redfoots? I'm not a novice reptile breeder, but this is my first tort project, like I said.

Thanks,
Kameron

If you haven't seen any Kameron.. there aren't any. (DUH!)

I walked past the first nest for about 10 days until I finally investigated it.

This pic (2nd nest) was taken after I had just "brushed" off the loose dirt with my fingers. In fact you can see the edge of the "hole/nest" at about one o'clock in the dirt.

Hope this helps.. I have 10 eggs in the oven now!

You gotta love 'em!

Although there were only 3 eggs.. from a 6 yr. old I had raised from a hatchling.. they look good!

My best to you Kameron.
