Can Beardies Hear?

Smuffin Aug 25, 2004 12:21 PM

I just got a bearded dragon about 2 weeks ago and I was wondering if they can hear? Mine looks up at me and turns his head so cute when I talk to him. Can they hear only vibrations or can they hear your voice?

lol, I think Rob was joking with you.

Yes, they can hear. Those holes with the thin membrane that sit just behind their eyes are their ears. Some lizards and most (or all?) snakes don't have ears, and they are the ones who only sense vibration.

Thank you very much.

Sorry, I was just messin'. Yes I do believe they can hear our voices unlike snakes who can only sense vibrations. If you look at the side of your beardie's head you'll see they tympanum (sp?) which I think is similar to our ear drums.

It is pretty cool. Especially when you talk to them and they lift and tilt their head. It's like they're trying to listen and figure out what you're saying! You're going to fall in love with your beardie!! They are so cool!

I am already in love with my little beardie. He is the cutest little thing. I sing to my beardie and he just turns his head and looks and looks at me. He probably thinks i'm nuts. lol
