geckos777 Aug 25, 2004 02:38 PM

I have decided that i want to get a breeding pair of tokays i have read that if i get them fairly young i will most likely be able to tame them. i just wanted to know if anybody could let me know how to go about this and what kind of lights and temps. would be best for them. Im trying to find out every possible thing i can before the reptile show in hamberg PA were i am going to most likely get the pair thank you

I'm not sure about "taming" them... i mean, yuo might be able to ocndition them to the point where they wont try to rip off any nearby fingers, but they will most likely never be like a crested gecko or a leopard gecko

My tokay is fairly tame, he eve often times sticks on the glass and rubs his head to come out. Anyway, I've been working on care sheets so if you want one on tokays email me at antonm85@yahoo.com.

First of all if your wanting a tame lizard don't get a tokay. They may calm down but probably won't. Like the earlier post you can probably get them "tamed" to the point where they won't run out of their hide box to attack while your trying to change their water but most tokays will not tolerate handling. Gloves are a must.

i have a tokay i have had for about 4 month and its a baby. So far its tamed down alot. Now it will alow me to pet it, like accually pet it on its back, some times if i reach in coming in on the side. It wont run. But if i continue and go anywhere near the head it will bark and jump. its a big improvement from what it first did. Yes my tokay hides in a cave during the day but still lets me pet him at night. I think they may tame down more if you handle them more then i have. I ussually pet him every other day, as i pet him and try to get him to move down the tank when i feed him. I like to watch him eat crickets so i get him to move down by the bottom so i can watch him to eat, and yes mine will eat with the lights on and me watching. Mine will only eat 2 every other night, they are large to medium sized crickets i know they are a little too large for him but he dont go for the smaller ones.
i hope some of this helps you
i am a new tokay owner also
i think they are great. mine will shake his tale and jump on the crickets when he eats its so cute
