4-5 month old gecko: what size mealies?

elcheal Aug 25, 2004 04:53 PM

What size mealworms should be fed to a 4-5 month old leopard gecko? I am thinking of getting my mealworms from americancricketranch.com and there are three sizes: regular, small and mini. Which size should I get? Also, how do most geckos do switching from crickets to mealworms? Thanks

I would go for the smalls even if they're too small you can raise them up to a bigger size. They should never be longer than the width of their head.
Don't feed large prey this is from a personal experience where my leo became constipated because i thought she was an adult female piglet and could eat anything. a month of baths later she's back to normal, but worried me to death.

Switching from crix really depends on the leo. Both of mine and my crested take mealworms and crix readily, but there are picky eaters out there.

Good luck

The easiest way to switch any kind of food is to do it gradually. start by offering one mealie with your regular crickets, when she is acostomed to eating just one, switch to two and reduce the crickets accordingly, carry on like this untill she eats just mealies! Good luck!

I would go with the medium mealworms, because the smalls are really REALLY tiny.

but switching from mealies to crickets shouldnt be too hard, seeings how crickets are alot more active then mealies. to go along with what snarks said. not only is constapation a problem. but the esophogus(spelling)runs right next to the spine, and a food item too big could accually not only choke the gecko but saprisingly break its back. im sure regular would be fine. i work at a petsmart, and all the mealies that are normal are pretty small. and going back to switching, good luck.
