Sad update

chameleo19 Aug 25, 2004 04:54 PM

Unfortunatly me female blue bar ambilobe took a turn for the worse from yesterday to today. So I rushed her to the vet first thing this morning and I already figured it to be she was egg bound. Upon the exam the vet determined she probably would not survive surgery and I think I knew this to but wasnt ready to throw in the towel. When the chameleon looked up at me with those eyes pretty much telling me that she was done and was giving up it ripped my heart out and I couldnt let her suffer anymore. So I opted to have her euthanized and a necropsy done. The necropsy revealed what I had already knew one of her 18 eggs was stuck in the oviduct and she egg bound as the egg then began to rott. It was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do because these animals are not my pets they are my children.

Very sad! At least you can have a bit (teeny tiny, but some) of comfort to know it was nothing you could have prevented or caused. Were any of the eggs viable?

I'm sorry to hear of your loss...

I know the feeling, my chams are like my children as well, I'm guessing the eggs were no good either since you said they started to rot

First of all thank you everyone for your kind words. No unfortunatly the eggs she was carrying were not even fertile so I didnt bother with an attempt to incubate, I really wish that the eggs would have been fertile I would have loved to have some of her offspring to carry on for her. As to the money lost that wasnt even a factor here for me that made it so difficult it was the time spent with her and the fact that I couldnt do anything to help her all I could do is sit back and watch and feel absolutly and completly helpless(that truely is the worst feeling when you cant do anything but sit by). Once again thank you all for your kind words. I will keep you all updated.
