Help with tegu

dmlove Aug 25, 2004 07:09 PM

Well, my new baby tegu is doing great and eating great. He is fine when he is out of his cage, until he gets stressed (the tail wagging) but for the most part hes fine. HOWEVER when he is in the cage, leike today, i reached in (from the top of the tank) to get him and he flipped, like a small sprint and kinda whipped his tail. I know many animals get scared when something comes from above, but i came from above, but towards him i came from the side. I just got him saturday. Are most young ones (bout 8-9 inches) like that? It WAS before i fed him today so maybe he was just agitated because he wasnt fed yet. Any ideas? I do handle him everyday until he gets stressed or whatever. Thanks.

My little guy does the same thing. I just got him on sunday and he's about 6" STV. He'll try to sprint a little when I first go to pick him up, but as soon as I get my hand under him he calms down and doesn't mind being held. I make sure to pick him up several times a day to try and get him used to it. I think its natural for them to be a little skittish when being picked up for a little while. Once they start to associate being picked up with being able to get out and explore, it'll get easier I think.

What you both are seeing when they try to sprint is a natural defense for them. When they are small like yours everything to them is a predator. When you place your hand in the tank you are thinking I am going to pick you up and hold you. They see your hand coiming into the tank and they think its going to eat me. Just be patient with them they will learn to trust you and size plays a large part in that. As they get a little bigger they calm down because they are no longer feeling so vulnerable. You can also try leaving your hand in the tank just set it there anything you can think of so that they get used to you and there fear will go away. Sounds like you are doing great though its just a natural reaction for them. Good luck

I also recently purchased a White headed Argentine tegu. I have had him for two weeks and his personality is fialy becoming evident. He still is a little skitish when i try and pick him up but once he is out he will climb onto my shoulder and just sit there. He is about 14 inches in total length.

You will love these little guys. They are the most amazing reptile I have ever had. Mine will walk around the house and follow me like a puppy they are so cute when they do that. Good luck with your little one.
