bitten by the baird bug (pics)

Kevin Saunders Aug 25, 2004 08:21 PM

I got a pair of bairds from Renegade Reptiles today. I just couldn't resist after seeing all the great pics on this forum. I only took quick low quality pics, which do them no justice. I thought I'd share some though. Now I just have to come up with some names. This is the male.

the female

I got my names from songs, lol. Lola and Frankie's names come from the song Frankie and Lola by Jimmy Buffett...and Jose and Rosa come from "he drinks tequila" by sammy kershaw and lorrie morgan...lol.

All day I've been thinking about calling them Jack and Diane or Tommy and Gina. Different songs, but that's kind of a weird coincidence.

Although they were both male Jan is as much or more a woman's name as it is a man's. Probably more now.

Congrats on the new additions.
They look great.
I believe you will thoruoghly enjoy them.
Just gotta' love the fiesty attitude as hatchlings.
And of course just how beautiful, and calm, they grow to be.
ENJOY
I am really glad to see thier popularity begin to grow.
And I'm not saying this just because I plan to breed mine in the spring. I tuly believe they are a highly underated rat snake and I just can't see anyone being disapointed if they ever own one.

It wasn't that long ago I remember your post looking to get a pair of these great snakes. Put me on the list when you breed yours and any pairs are available.

Luckily for me, mine handled like a dream when I got them out. The male did strike the camera when I zoomed close to him, but no rattling, musking, or squirming. I'm sure they're just tired from the trip though. I'll keep you guys updated with new pics as they shed and change as long as you guys do the same.

Ive found newly shipped arrivals tend to be in sort of a shock mode for up to a week. They will either be calm and gentle or very defensive. And the funny thing is most will reverse there attitudes(good or bad) after shipping shock is over.Just a observation on what Ive noticed over the years. My adult male bairdi was an exception.Im thinking about naming him snuggles because he loves being held.He is the most active,non-afraid,curious snake I have ever owned. He doesnt use his hide much and is comfortable sitting anywhere in his tank.If I put my arm in the tank he will crawl up and out.I pray to the god of reptiles that I can pass these traits on to his offspring. If he only had ears I bet I could call him and he would come.

I like to see them come out fiesty, rattling, and musking. Ahhhh...sweet smells of Spring...LOL! Active juves are healthy juves (usually)...and ya' just gotta love those Asians, stinky as they are

PS: Congrats on those nice-looking Baird's.

You had asked in an earlier post about how big my bairdis were now.
I did a general check last night and they are both running around 46 to 48 inches.
I just kind of stretched them accross the front of a 55 gallon aquarium...lol

When you get your bairdis you will have to post pics.

Great looking bairds.I plan on breeding mine this comming spring and keeping them all just to watch them change.I got my adult male from a reptile rescue and missed out on all the changes. In a way im jealous.Keep us posted with new pics after each shed. There a great addiction...Paul

I finally got a female for my male bairdi and another pair. The newly acquired snakes are 04's so I will have some time until I can breed them. I'm just glad I get to witness the color changes for myself.

I purchased mine from Hawkeye Herps and got a good deal on them too. They all feed well and have that typical tail rattling behvaior. That's why I like em...all bluff...except in coloration.

I got 1.1 bairdi babies from hawkeye herps....same clutch yours came out of. They're both wonderful...both rattle their tails all the time (which kinda freaked me out the first few times they did that...never had a snake do that to me before.) i had a feeding problem with the male but i discovered through trial and error that he wanted a warmer tank than i was giving him. But yeah keep me posted on your babies procecss.
