Feeding day, finally.

dfr Aug 26, 2004 03:29 AM

` One of the convenient things about Boids, if feeding gets put off for a few days, they don't mind.
`
` I've been working with this community for five years, and they are getting downright polite about eating. Except for the old Ball. He will chase me around, trying to get as much as possible.
`

`

`

`

`

`

`
` The old Ball likes to get his two in advance. He'd probably eat three, if I let him. Anybody tries to get one is going to pull back a stub!

`

`

`

`

`
` Stuffed, now time for a nap. The busboy will clean up the mess. For the next two weeks, it's heavy duty poop patrol, 24/7.

I'd say heavy duty poop patrol alright, lol. You feed your yellows during a shedding process? I know you have had yours alot longer than I've had mine. Anyway, great pics. Macroclemys a.k.a. Physignathus, CrownedOne, Steven

WOW!! I am suprised that your red tail did not try to get that rat out of your hands or from your anaconda. I , myself would not try that but you know your snakes. MAN....cool pix

They just let you hold the rat there and they come get it? Cool, but I think your gonna lose a finger someday.

` Lose a finger !!! He's not a snapping turtle! LOL Boids teeth can't slice, chew, or crush. They're only for gripping, and holding. Even large Boids teeth make tiny holes, but a lot of them. Boids like to take one bite, get it right the first time, then hold it, for a feeding strike.
` I've had lots of feeding ( and other type ) bites from Boids, and I mean LOTS. If it's a moderately sized snake that isn't going to coil you and kill you, you just relax, and wait for them to let go. It usually doesn't even bleed much, until they let go, if you do it right. Struggling, pulling away, and trying to disengage the snake's teeth will make it much worse for you, and likely injure the snake, too. I'm talking about tame, pet snakes that have made a mistake, or which you have insulted. Warning strikes usually don't even involve holding on. They just slap you with an open mouth, and the incredibly sharp points make tiny holes in you.
` If you make a SFE with a big one, struggle like HELL. If all else fails, bend way over backward, and kiss your own ass goodbye. By the way, a SFE doesn't necessarily have anything to do with what you're doing. It's all about what the snake perceives.

I agree...no limb loss on a conda. And if you know your snake well, you can safely feed by hand..I do for some and not for others. I know you need to always be expecting the unexpected and blah blah so please nobody respond with a mindless lecture.

tim5580 Aug 29, 2004 08:57 PM

I just always heard feeding by hand is bad, you'll get bit badly. My ATB used to bite me all the time when I fed him. Or held him. Or opened his cage. Or tried to take a picture of him. Or was within distance. Or if he felt like it. Thats why I called him "Bitey"

` I give the large female Yellow 4 to 6 pounds of food, every 2 months.
` The large male Yellow gets 3 pounds of food, every 2 months.
` They're both young adults. Still growing quickly. In the next year or so, I plan to cut them to every 3 months. It's really fun to feed them, and I'd like to do it more often. I've just seen too many "power fed", oversize Boids die early.
` The younger Anacondas are fed from 10 day intervals, to 5 week intervals, depending on age, size , and rate of growth.
`
` And this two year old, who is already over 6 feet, can eat 3 pounds, every month. I may be overfeeding her. She looks like she's going to be a giant Boa. I already broke my rules by paying a high price for her. So, I'm going to feed her heavily until she's 4 years old. I have a nice, pink, male B.c.i., waiting for her to grow up.

Those pics scared me lol my boa would bite my arm off if I get 2 feet from him while he's "hunting".

Also I noticed the rats looked wet is this from dethawing or do you dip them?

dfr Sep 01, 2004 01:51 PM

` I thaw them with very warm water. I feed them soaking wet. It seems to make them go down easier, and the Anacondas don't mind. My Ball Pythons, and other Boas all take them dripping wet, too.
` When you feed wet food, do be careful of the dripping water. It smells like food, and can cause SFE's.
