Snake Lover's Diary pics

greg woodie Aug 26, 2004 10:29 AM

hey, Keith! i was wondering if you could post a few more pics from the book just for nostalgia's sake. the ones i remember the most are the Florida King, the Milk and the Eastern Hognose. you know, i must have almost memorized that book because i haven't seen it since the 70's and i can still recall where/how most of those snakes were found! the one that sticks out in my mind is when the boy and his friend were leaving the New Jersey Pine Barrens and reeled in the 6 foot Eastern King out of the trash pile on the side of the road. now that's the kind of catch that i dream about!

Greg,
The book "A Snake Lover's Diary" is my all time favorite. I too memorized that book after checking it out at my elementary school library a multitude of times. I was fortunate to obtain a copy of the book last year and have introduced the book to my son to enjoy. If you search hard enough, you may be able to find a copy out there.

my teenaged nepew recently returned from a trip to the mountains and i asked him how the herping was. 'sucked' was his one word answer! surprised, i asked him why. 'because there's no trash piles up there, i can't herp w/out trash'. LOL! i grew up running around in clean woods but he grew up being taken directly to the hot spots [usually dump sites] by his father and i and is now hopelessly hooked on trash. sigh.....well at least he doesn't chase toads around all day anymore. ;>]

Great story, I was brought up in clean woods myself but being originally from the North we knew of densites to explore. I never messed with dumps back then.

Now residing in the South though I stick with an old trick many old timers used up North. Incedibly successful tactic we used in the Barrens that has given us similar results when used in Osceola and the ANF.

Where are you located?

right on the nj/del/pa border. another story that just happened very recently: i went behind an abandoned resturant out on rt. 1 [old baltimore pike] near media, pa. to flip debris looking for e. milks. excellent area!! however, yellow jackets thought so too and painfully sent me packing. they got in the truck and everything! it was a disaster almost. maybe i'll try back in the early spring if it's still there.......

is a PA girl herself. She is originally from Pittsburgh. She likes those Steelers with myself originally from NYC still bias toward the Jets. I never herped PA aside of the Pocono area on a few Summer mornings.

New York and Jersey were my exploration areas. We use to come across many kings, rats and waters. Pines were always a favorite though.

Our new areas include frequent trips toward the ANF, Ocala and Osceola here in Florida. We are currently looking at available property around the ANF area for another homesite. We have never come across the amount of herps ever as we have this past season. Incredible. I could not begin to imagine how great some of these herp populations must have been during the commercial collectors heyday.
