Tiny white mites in substrate

Jaegar Aug 26, 2004 01:42 PM

Can anyone tell me where these mites are coming from. I put in new forest floor substrate about 21/2 weeks ago and I just noticed them yesterday. The same thing happened the last time I added new substrate. In about 2-3 weeks the mites showed up. Will these hurt my pac-man? The only thing I'm adding to the tank are dusted crickets. I don't understand where they're coming from.

not all little whitw bugs in substrates are bad

The last time this happened, I noticed them all bunched up on a cricket leg so I am assuming they may not be good for the frog. I keep the tank clean, the cricket leg wasn't there for very long. The bugs are so small I hadn't noticed them until they were all on top of each other I assume eating the cricket leg. I haven't seen any of them on the frog. From this info do you think they're bad and do you have any idea where they're coming from? Could they be in the substrate brick and then hatch out after about 2-3 weeks of being put in the tank?

If they jump then they are springtails and are harmless.
Otherwise I would suspect harmless soil dwelling mites that feed on decomposing organic matter.

I would guess that they are just baby crickets. I see them all the time in my frogs cage.
