Male or Female baby S. Alligator Lizards

jacobptej1 Aug 26, 2004 03:01 PM

Alice, your babies look fantastic. Those are great pics! My baby al's hatched yesterday and some are hatching today. They look just like yours. How do I tell if they are a male or female. I'm in California too so we are giving our away too or maybe sell them, I'm not sure.

Now, yours are still in the vermiculite. I took the little guys out and put them on paper towels misted with water like you suggested. Anything else I should be doing. They have water and I put some small crickets in there even though I doubt they're eating them. Anything else?

Sounds like you're doing everything right. Just make sure the crickets are dusted with a good calcium supplement. Also, since southern als are a native California reptile it is illegal to sell them in California which is why giving them away is the only option.

Alice,

Thank you for your message. How do I tell if they are male or female?

Where in California are you from?

You can't sex them as hatchlings unless you get lucky and have one evert its hemipenes. The males don't start developing a broader head until they are around 2 years old.
