Moving with snakes (Indigos)

ZPD Aug 26, 2004 03:57 PM

Say I want to move from California to Oregon and wanted to keep my Indigos. What if I was to drive across the state with them in a car? Second, what if I wanted to move to say.....New York and could only go by plane... Would i have to get a permit to transfer them to myself? I wonder if there is any way you could bring them on board with you? Im guessing the answer is no. But what about driving into another state with them?

As I understand it, you should not need a permit simply to transport the snake. The permit is only required for transactions. However, the state you move into may require you to have a permit.
Then again, I may be all wet! I'm sure someone here will know for sure.
As for taking them on a plane, I seriously doubt that you can take them on board with you.

There are no state laws in the state you are moving to,
you don't have to do anything.

It would be a good idea to get documentation of the date that you purchased the snake in the original state, (bill of sale with date) and keep some sort of proof that you lived in that state at the time.

I asked this question directly to Victoria Davis of USFWS a couple years ago and that is what I was told.

So the federal permit is strictly for selling across state lines and not for the purpose of possessing the snake. If this is the case, would I be able to drive to California, but an Eastern Indigo there, and then drive back to Arizona with it without needing the permit?

Is it where the transaction occurs that matters or where the seller and buyer live? If it is living locations then does that mean an out of state breeder, coming to a repti show locally, would have to require a local buyer to have the federal permit?
