Can chameleons see infrared light?

boidsntegus Aug 26, 2004 05:03 PM

I don't have my cham yet, but my setup is next to my leopard gecko cage and I have a red heat bulb which shines a little into the chams cage. Do you think this will disturb the cham? I know the gecko itself will not, because mine is rarely seen, and I don't think a cham would see a little gecko like that as any threat anyway. But to me, the light is bright red, I can see the cage and all around it very well. Is it just a myth that reptiles cannot see red, or this true? Also, has anybody ever bought a cham from the guy named CHARLIE in the classifieds? His chams look great, but I always like to get lots of opinions. Thanks for your time!

Yes, technically they can see the whole spectrum of VISIBLE light and possibly some colors humans can't. Just to be sure I would hang something between the cages to block the light at night. If the red light cycled on and off during the night and it was off when the cham fell asleep it would not wake it up, but it might keep it from getting to sleep.
