What are these snakes like to handle? Are they docile? I know they get really large. Can you handle them and just relax or must one always be watching where their head is?

BILLY Aug 26, 2004 06:26 PM

Thanks for the kind words!

Northern pines, or pits in general, in my experience, have been the BEST pet snakes I have ever owned. Before I got into pits, I had always heard that bulls, pines, and gophers were very mean, nasty, and would strike at you 24/7, etc.

Out of my 20 pits I have, only 1 has any kind of attitude, that being my albino southern pine. Every other pit I have is tame as a kitten. I have 6 northerns, including those two I have posted pics on today, and they are all so docile. My oldest one can lay on my arm for hours, and he has fallen asleep before there before! My other northerns are the same, where I can watch a movie, read, etc. and they are content just chilling on my hand or curled up around my arm. I never have to keep an eye out for them biting me outta the blue.

If you don't own one, you should get one. I can't speak for other snakes out there, but if you give the northern attention, then it should turn out very handable and docile.

Take care!

The Crawl Space

Hey Ron!!

Yeah...it was very strange when that happened! LOL!

I was holding Solomon, my oldest and largest northern, one night as I was crusing the forums on Kingsnake and he had been curled up around my whole hand and wrist in a ball for about 45 minutes. My hand was going completely numb from his weight, so I glanced over from the computer to check on him and saw his body on a sideways slant, which looked quite odd. I then made quick motions in front of his face and he was completely still, not flinching once. He had about 8 inces of his last part of his body with his tail hanging off my arm in mid-air and I felt it and it was completely limp. I then picked up his tail and let it drop at least 3 times and he had no tension or reflex of any sort. He felt just like a rubber snake! LOL! Then....I watched his breathing and it was very, very slow, almost nonexistent, and came to the conclusion that he had fallen asleep. Weird, eh?

Here he is NOT sleeping!

Take care!

Very nice northerns! This one pictured looks a lot like the one I got from John Ginter last year. That red one is going to be fantastic. Congratulations!
I agree with you on the temperament issue. One exception: the meanest snake I've ever had is a particular female I've got now from the Kingsville line. She would rather kill herself than let you pick her up! She is so aggressive and boisterous that she is quite comical. Probably not so funny when she is six feet, however.

Man.........I just got my first female Kingsville red bull and I hope she doesn't end up being that mean! LOL!

Hey.....post a pic of your northern from Ginter!

Yo Billy!
So let me get this straight--you don't have a bad looking snake in the lot and all but one are gentle as lambs???????? You call this fair???? How can one guy be so lucky??? You might want to spread the wealth. I have plenty of room!!!!! LOL! Seriously bro, I am always impressed with your stock! For newbies out there, your snakes behavior will reflect their care.
Billy is one of the best! Good job guy!
