Same species different species?

is the cotten mouth the same species as the water moccasian (spelling?) just different common names. or are they the same species just different ssp?
my grandma got me confused on these snakes sayingthey are different animals but im not so sure

Same species, some people I believe even call them a trapjaw or something like that.

Sometimes you have to be careful: lots of people (especially people with knee jerk fear of venomous snakes) will call any water snake a water moccasin. In reality, there is only one type of venomous water snake in USA. That is the Water Moccasin or as some call it "KottonMouth."
