Beauty snakes are amazing!

caecilianman02 Aug 26, 2004 06:04 PM

...
And really beautiful too! I want to see pictures of peoples beauty snakes! Blue beauties are my favorite. I don't keep any, but saw some at the Ohio show when I went to get my yellow/ Everglades intergrade. So, does anyone have any beautiful beauty snake photos to share?

This is one of the first blues to be imported into the U.S. in 1997. Another old, crummy photo of a beautiful snake...

His name is Fenrir, and he is uncharacteristically sweet! Great snake to handle!

Hi there:

Now those are beautiful! I love that blue beauty! I think I like them so much because my interest in snakes began with racers, and these guys are so similar. Are these a relative newcomer to the hobby? All of a sudden they seem to be taking this forum by storm! Thanks for posting. I'd love to see more!

Hey how much were the Blues you saw in Ohio? I am going to IN on Sunday and wanted an idea of how much they are going for at the shows!
THANKS

Hi there:

I didn't see a price label; only a name tag. Sorry!

Thanks though! I am going back and forth between Blues and Chinese. But I really love Russian rats, and had planned on getting a pair, but was talked out of it by a close fried. Which is probably the best idea for now, because I should stick to one animal at a time!!

I don't have any blue beauties, Dave, but I do agree that taeniura is a great species. They're very interesting for many reasons, including the fact they have such a large range in Asia and so many subspecies. I prefer smaller snakes, however, so I've picked the smallest of the taeniura ssps., the Chinese stripe-tailed rat, to work with. These snakes get four to five feet in length.

This is my 2003 calico female bred from my calico-het female and calico-het male...

This is the calico-het mother of the first snake...

This male t. taeniura was sold to me as an albino, but I think it could possibly be hypomelanistic. I've talked to several breeders who agree it looks hypo, but noone has bred these in the U.S. that I know of, and I can't really be sure.

He is also the father of this year's brood, as I crossed him with my calico-het female. The babies are all normal looking, except for a few that are lighter, and are het for hypo (or albino, whichever). About half of them are het for calico also. Here's one of the darker ones...

I think the normal color/pattern is very cool in this ssps. too. These snakes are hardy and pretty easy to care for. I think you'd like them.

Terry....the calico Chinese stripe-tailed rat is amazing.
I love it! Are Chinese stripe-tailed ( het for calico ) easy to come by? or the calicos themselves? (I think I'm in love!!)

Miya, I think there's a couple people that breed calicos in the U.S. I don't know about the other morph (hypo?) Unfortunately, I only have the one calico myself. The babies I got this year only have a 50% chance of being calico-hets, so I can't really call them calico-hets. Next year I'll probably breed my calico-hets and have a 25% chance of calicos :~)

I am going to the The Indianapolis Breeder's Expo on Sunday, (with a list a mile long.) I was already leaning towards Chinese beauties rather than Taiwan because of size.
It really is a hard choice, because I love the Blues and Russians too. I guess I will just have to see what everyone has and try not to come home with 10 different snakes! I'll post some pics when everybody is calm and feels at home!

Was it this hard to decide for everyone on their first breeding project or is it the consensus that they new what they wanted; period??

It was hard for me to decide to go into the taeniura species because of their size and because they are quite different from the American ratsnakes. Once I decided, there was no question. There are things I really like about the Chinese taeniura, size being one, and color/pattern, and the fact they're from further north, making them hardy and easier for me to care for. I also like the species, in general, because of their natural history and evolutionary position, etc. I guess that's why I'm excited about this species and breeding the ones I have. I picked up the female calico-het, just because I needed a female and I liked her looks, and I got the hypo male on impulse..just love the colors. I'm always looking for normals too, that have outstanding color/pattern and come from the specific locale I'm interested in, and that I can outcross to. I'm a complicated person...LOL!

Hi Terry,

I just had to say that those are some gorgeous snakes. I'm not as familiar with this Beauty snake. You say they get only 4-5 feet long? They'd be hard-pressed to reach my female Bairdi in length. I love the beauties (esp. blues and the ridleyi with a white stripe), but just don't have the space they require.

Any chance of getting a full body shot of the het calico mother? She looks gorgeous in that shot, but I can't see all of her. :D

(Oh, and in my opinion, there's no chance that other snake is an albino (amelanistic) since it has black pupils. A true amel has red eyes and no melanin/dark patterning. The black is most certainly reduced and the result is outstanding, much prettier than any amel anyday IMHO. I'd call it hypomelanistic. )

Hi, Hurley.

Let me qualify that by saying my snakes get 4 to 5 ft., and that's the big female. The males are smaller, yet, and I keep them in ten gal. tanks. Of course, if you were to poll all t. taeniura keepers, you'd probably get a larger ave. size.

Thanks..haha. That's a nice comment. I think she has great color/pattern too and she sure is healthy. Here's a shot from last June when she was gravid...

Thanks, again. I really appreciate this comment. I had the same thoughts and really like this snake (thus breeding for the hets). I feel better now, and am a little more sure it's hypo. I'm just not that familiar with the mutations.

Starkey, that's a pretty snake. Is that a 'mocquardi', and what kind of length does she have? Thanks....TC.
