natural egg incubation

xturtlepowerx Aug 26, 2004 06:51 PM

has anyone had any success incubating eggs indoors without an incubator...meaning just leaving them slightly moist if the temp stays around 70-80 degrees?

I have had success putting the eggs in moist vermiculite in a warm closet that stayed between 70-80 degrees, with a few nights dipping to 67-68 degrees with most of the eggs hatching at 59-65 days of incubation. This year I bought a hovabator incubator and had a slightly better hatch success rate.

I haven't tried with boxie eggs but I've currently got a clutch of eastern painted turtles hatching that were incubated ontop of the fridge.. it took longer and most if not all the hatchlings will be male but atleast they're hatching.

I hatched 2 for 2 last year and 4 for 4 this year(Eastern Boxies)by keeping them in a closed room with the window open.I live in SC so it is the proper environment for ambient temperature incubation.
