NM is a difficult place to find alterna. There will be an area South of you that has suitable habitat and alterna have been found but alterna are protected in NM so no touch.

You need to talk to ErikNM. Don't know if he posts on this forum, but check the "Field Notes and Observations" forum and page him.

I could tell you where else to find him, with a higher probability of success, but then my message would be removed by the moderator.

Roswell isn't good habitat for alterna. It is rather flat, but you could find milksnakes, C.viridis, C.atrox, Sisturus, racers, desert kings, and quite a few other snakes. The best thing about Roswell is that there are barking frogs nearby. I've never found one, but supposedly they are common at a park over there.

Head south about 60 miles and you will hit the Guadalupe Mountains. Alterna can be found there, but are very hard to come by. Subocs, lepidus, molossus, ribbon snakes, water snakes, and a few other of the rarer snakes are found in that area also. Send me an e-mail some time when you get to Roswell.
