De-wormers - what to use?

LovelyLeopards Jun 25, 2003 12:06 AM

I'm just curious what other hobbyists use as a routine, preventitive de-wormer for their geckos? Is panacure the best bet, or has anyone used the stuff available "over the counter", like "Worm Guard" and "Rid Worm"? Is there any particualr product I should stay away from. Thanks for input!

Use only Panacur, this is sold oTC in a paste form (but solution is berst for leos) as SafeGuard. 10% concentration. Do not use any other dewormer, panacur has huge safety ratio and is most effective, too. Best to get a prescription from vet first time, afterwards can get a quantity to keep on hand and administer every 6 mo. to 1 year preventatively---if you feed crickets. If you feed only mealworms, it is not neccessary to treta unless you notice symptoms. Mealworms tend to be "clean" and not carry parasites.

I've seen only 2 pet store sold wormers for reptiles. One doesn't seem to be sold any longer, which is good, because the drug in it was linked to deaths and problems in several species. The other contains "herbal formulas". One of these is wormwood, which, yes, is a wormer....but because it is an herb, getting the correct dose is dangerous. It does not have a wide safety margin. It's hard to tell how much of the active ingredient is concentrated in a given plant, even if you measure the amount of the plant you use.

Other wormers I've seen lately contain nothing which would actually get rid of parasites.

Use Panacur. I've also acquired panacur in granule form, but in a higher concentration, so I'm going to need to do some careful measuring to get safe doses from it. The whole packet treats a 400 pound horse. :P
