Ornate tegu breeding

Teidae-dude Aug 26, 2004 10:51 PM

I have a male ornate tegu and I want to know if I breed him to a regular argentine b&w, will any of the babies be ornates?
And if not, how much would an ornate female go for?

I am not sure what you are referring to as an ornate Tegu. Do you have a picture of him? As for breeding if your Arg. has missed even one hibernation they will more than likely not ever breed. Arg. have to hibernate every year including the first year when they are born. I would love to see a pic good luck to you.

but brumation is not necessary for successful breeding. My Argentine male has only brumated lightly for 2 of his 4 winter seasons. My female has never truly brumated. They bred this past spring and she laid a fertile clutch of eggs.
My blues that have bred successfully didn't brumate the winter before breeding either. As a matter of fact, we purchased the female in September, they bred in late October and she laid eggs in December!!

Wow I apologize then for the information I put out. I have talked to a few reputable breeders and that is what information I recieved. I do not intend to misslead any one. I was passing on what I was told. When you say light brumation are you refering to the cycle where they will sleep a few days get up eat and then sleep a few more days? They continue this for several weeks.
It is encouraging for me to hear that since I have a blue I wanted to breed but she missed a hibernation and I was afraid that she would never breed. Thank you for setting me straight on that one I will not post they have to brumate before breeding again. Thanks

there is some truth to it. Taz my first tegu (male) HIBERNATED his first winter. the next 2 he didn't, and he has for the past 2 winters. he was HIBERNATING not brumating. he was under for 6mos during hibernation. i have some tegus at the store, and have had others at my house. they have been breeding. i think if they hibernate and then don't it does mess them up. because Taz flat won't breed. i had him with 5 females in a small room and he didnt do anything with them. they dont have to hibernate to breed. as i have had some where i never hibernated them and they have bred successfully. i have had ones that i had hibernate every year and they successfully bred. and i have had others like Taz that just wont breed because i had them hibernate and then the next year i didnt. i will add that the ones that hibernate have larger clutches of eggs than the ones that dont. babies seem the same though. this is my experience, not to say this is how they all are. another thing is i get all my tegus from Bert at AgamaIntl. and as we all know he hibernates all his tegus, maybe it might be something in the genes or instinct or something of that sort that if you mix them up with hibernating one year and then not the next it can mess them up. and fyi, im not trying to breed any of my tegus as i have Taz and Rufus my two males in one cage. and then Debbie is in a seperate cage as she was getting aggressive and very territorial towards my other 2 tegus. would chase Rufus around biting at his tail she was a bit bigger than him at 44". one day she did it to Taz and he knocked her against the wall. so it was quite apparent that i needed to seperate them.

Hey thank you for the infoormation. I have never tried to breed my tegus either. I just remember being told they had to hibernate. I know I have talked to Bert at agama international and he was telling me that he has had them miss one hibernation and never breed again. I guess it must depend on if the tegu has been trained so to speak to hibernate or not. Either way it is interesting since there are so many different people with such different and varied results. Thanks

If the above were true almost 99% of my tegus would have ever bred. It's a wives tale and totally NOT true .

As I posted above I am sorry for the missinformation about the brumation before breeding. I was passing on information that I got regarding breeding from asking others about it. I have never bred tegus so am not speaking from experience. I was just passing on what I heard and had believed to be true.
I am sorry for the confusion I have caused. Thank you though for setting me straight on that. Could you answer another question for me then to clarify information I recieved?
I was told that tegus would not breed excpet for after bruamtion and it would be in early spring only like April May time frame. I was also told they needed to hibernate for 6 months. Is there any truth to those statements? There is not a lot of information out there on how to breed tegus so the information I get is all word of mouth stuff. I would be gratefull for an answer from you since I know of you and trust your response. Thank you again for correcting me on my thought they had to brumate.
