What is an appropriate sized shoe/sweqater box for leos??? What is the minimum size for one adult leo??

Also how many holes do you put in it?? Mine seem to hold too much humidity and theres a bunch of holes in it?!?

Ok, this question would be easy to answer if we knew what you were going to make the shoe box/sweater box... Are you asking what size would make a good cage or humid hide or....?

How big/old are the leos? How many are you putting together?

As for holes, take a hammer and ice pick and punch the heck out of the lid (without the leos in there, of course!)

Size all depends on how many leos you are putting in the sweater box. For my one adult leo (spoiled as she is), she is in a 90qt container. You can obviously go smaller, but when looking last night at Walmart for other sizes, the smallest size I would recommend for an adult is a 30qt, because they are the largest floor space allowed until they start getting really deep. As far as holes, make sure you drill some on each side of the tank, as well as all along the top. I personally did about 30 holes on the front, 15 on each short side and about 30 on the back corners in 3 rows of 5 on each side (kind of different than my 3 rows of 10 across the entire front). I also drilled probably 40 holes all along the top of the lid to make sure the air circulation is good.
Humidity could be an issue for several reasons...one, what substrate do you use? Also, the air circulation without holes in the top can cause major problems. Another thing to think about is how much water do you have, and is it sitting on the hot side of the tank? If so, the water will evaporate faster and cause humidity build up.
Hope this answers some questions, and post up some pics when you get it done!

How do you have the heat lamp set up so it dont melt the lid? That is a lamp on the top right?

KelsHerps Aug 27, 2004 11:18 PM

Actually, that heat lamp was just kind of sitting there not turned on. I use a human heating pad under the tank wrapped in a towel. There are ways to make the heat lamp idea work though...make sure you cut a hole in the top about 2 inches bigger all around than the heat lamp. Get some regular hardware cloth (basically small chicken wire), melt it to the plastic with either a blow torch or zip tie it to the top, and there you go. The only thing that scares me about actual heat lamps is the heat getting too hot inside the tank and melting the plastic, that's why I use the human heating pad underneath. I didn't even realize that was on top when I took the pic!

I want the boxes to be like the ones in rack systems. I have two shoe boxes now holding one adult leo in each. The boxes are slightly smaller then a ten gallon tank in floor space. And about three inches maybe four inches high.It seem to work fine. I added more and larger holes in it and the humidity went down alot. I think it will be fine and i believe it to be sufficient in size for adult leos.

But maybe in the near future when i get my rack system done i will get bigger boxes.

thanks for the help

...and put as many hole as you can along the top of the front and back, the narrow sides if you are using a rack system.
