Availability of New Guinea Carpet Pythons

gant77 Aug 27, 2004 01:27 AM

Hi, I am new to the Carpet Python species and am becoming very intrested in the New Guinea Carpet. I dont currently own any of the Carpet Species, I want to do my homework! I do however maintain a colony of Ball Pythons, so I am not new to Pythons themselves!
Can anyone provide any information on breeders and anything Carpet keepers might find useful in my info search?!
Many Thanks-Casey

New Guinea Carpet python= Irian Jaya Carpet python= Papuan Carpet Python

Three names for the smae snake...THE best colloection and one of the major breeders of this subspecies of carpet is Yasser/Spitfire Reptiles. Here is the website: http://www.spitfirereptiles.com/

Also, Papuans range from 4ft to 6ft as adults. They are the smallest of the carpets on average. They sometimes can be difficult to transition from mice to rats if they are fed mice from the begining. Otherwise their care is pretty simular to all the other carpets (except diamonds).

Casey,
NG carpets are also known as Irian Jaya Carpets. But this name is now outdated as the country name was formally changed to West Papua. The info you'd be looking for would most likely be found when searching for info under "Irian Jaya Carpet Python" than NG or West Papuan Carpet. Ya follow?
As far as breeders go, we work with a large collection of them as well many other breeders. I know of a few ads currently running on the classifieds with some for sale.
If you'd like, take a look at our website below and see what preference you have for looks. They vary quite a bit with high color/contrast specimens being the most sought after. The they can be brilliant gold and orange or very dark brown/black.
We are primarily working with the lighter and brighter ones in hopes of creating some even better colored animals.
As far as size goes, these carpets tend to stay smaller than the rest with avg adult sizes of 4-5.5 feet. There are a few extreme cases of females over 7 feet however. In regards to temperament, I believe the IJ/ Papuans are more calm than Jungles and coastals, with some being almost shy. They are a very hardy species and quite rewardign to raise. They change color into adulthood more than any other carpet species out there.
If you ahve the latest issue of Reptiles Magazine (october), there is a great article written by our good friends at Reptilicus Reptiles that gives a great overview of the various species/forms of Carpets that are available including the IJ/Papuan Carpets. There are also many pics of each.I am somewhat partial to the one on page 49 however LOL!
Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have.
