Tank Recommendations....Two hatchlings...what else do I need?

jhpfunk Aug 27, 2004 02:02 AM

I will be purchasing a Centrata Diamondback and Blanding's hatchlings (one of each) in a few days. I need help with the set-up. I don't want to overwhelm the two new fellas, but I don't want to replace the tank in a year either. Any suggestions on size, filters, heaters etc? I was looking at four All-Glass tanks:
36 Gallon Bowed Front 30wx15dx21h
46 Gallon Bowed Front 36wx15wx20h
30 Gallon Standard 36x12x16
and on the smaller side...
20 Gallon Long Standard 30x12x16

Let me know what ya'll think, please.

Ok, so after reading a nuch of postings, I now know that I should be getting at least the 75 gallon with a very powerful filer. How much of the tank should be filled? Half way, more than half? Any thoughts on the need for a heater if I have a lamp pointing down and heating up the joint? Do I need the hood/cover with the florecent bulb? Can I add a third turle comfortably?

First things first. You will NEED a 5.0 UVB bulb *VERY IMPORTANT*
You will also need a basking light, you can use a regular light bulb, probably 75 watts. If they are babies, I would start out with a 20 long aquarium with a duetto dj100 filter. You will still need to clean it about every week to every other week. I also recommend a water heater, the temp should stay around 75 - 80 degrees in the water. Make sure you have a rock or something out of the water that they can bask on. Place the heat light above the basking area. Good Luck!

I have a hatchling DBT and I will take a picture of his setup when I get home.
