Question about king snake

kornchicka0000 Aug 27, 2004 05:27 AM

I just bought a california king snake thats about a year and a half old. I've notcied a small hard bump on his back when I brought him home. It feels like a bone stickingup or something. Is this something I should be worried about? This is my first snake. Please reply. Thanks.

It sounds like a kink in the spine. Its a defect from either inbreeding and sometimes can be caused by incubation problems while the embryo was forming. Breeders usually sell kinked animals very cheap or give them away. It should have a normal life though and as long as you enjoy the snake it doesnt matter.

Ever consider that it might be caused by some deficiency in the mother? Most of the times I've HEARD of it, they were produced by young, small females that produced perfect babies in later years. What sort of incubation problems do you think could cause kinking?
