Alternative feeding, frogs?

cactuskent Aug 27, 2004 07:02 AM

I've read in some books and certain care sheets that a natural prey for ball pythons are frogs. I was wondering if anyone has ever fed frogs? If so what kind? Is it safe/healthy? What's the nutritional value like in comparisan to rats? Also- are there anymore alternative food sources?

I have no intention at all of making frogs a staple food in my pythons diet- If it is considered okay I may possibly try it once. thanks

Where in the heck did you read that? And WHY would you?

Ball pythons can be picky eaters as it is, can you imagine getting a ball that would only eat frogs?!

I dont know if I would try it even. I have read alot of books on ball pythons, and ball python journals for the wild and have never seen anything about them eatting frogs.

I think it would be hard to find captive bred clean frogs but I’m not up on where commercial frogs come from. I'd worry about parasites worse with cold-blooded prey even if they will take it.

I did hear from a reliable source about a ball python getting loose and eating fish out of a tank so I suppose anything is possible.

Why? If you just want to do it once it soulds like you just want to see a snake eat a frog.
