Blue racer photos please!

caecilianman02 Aug 27, 2004 07:41 AM

Hi there:

My entire interest in reptiles began with racers, because my dad, who grew up in a rural area of Ohio, said that it was hard not to go anywhere, even your backyard, without encountering a snake or two. He used to tell me stories of his racers; some blacks and a blue, and I was captivated.
He traded for the blacks, or maybe he caught them in a marsh or something. I can't remember. But I really liked to hear about his blue racer. His dad went to an army base, and brought back with him a big metal toolbox. He opened it, and inside was a blue racer. Being a little kid, dad was terrified of the thing, but still found it beautiful.
I love blue racers! My interest began to change to other reptiles, just because I stared in awe at a photo of a blue snake. And now I even keep caecilians. So...
Who has pictures or stories?

DAVE

Story; there are a population of racer in cherokee county Kansas that is VERY blue. They are technicaly eastern yellow belly acording to field guides. It would be interesting to put one next to a true blue racer, I personaly think these are more of a true blue color. Max, the person that has posted the occasional picture for me has seen one in person and was impresed, maby he will comment.

Sighthunter, the racers in KS. are just a really pretty version of the Eastern yellow-bellied (I wish we had a picture of them).
They are an exceptionally beautiful animal, but are completely different from the blue racers.
This pic was taken by someone in MI. (I borrowed it from this forum over a year ago). It is a blue racer.
Cheers,
Max

Max, if you bug me I will go out, (you know where) and photograph these blue easterns for the interested party. After looking at your picture I can tell that my population is just a blue morph, but definatly more blue than your picture.

Seems to be as much controversy about Blue racers as there is down here in South Florida where all the (alledged) subspecies (Southern, Brown Chinned, Everglades...)of racer mix and vary. of course over developement has not helped either.

The pictures that Max had sent were clearly different than the blue (morph) from Kansas. I will try to get a picture, the head coloration and slight structure difference is evident, that being said I think you will be impressed with the color.
